Degree Program: Education Hometown: St. Louis, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2023 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? When I chose Mizzou, I chose it because I really wanted to have the big school feel. I love going to the football games, and having hundreds of clubs and organizations makes it so easy to get involved on campus. I was involved in a lot in high school and I definitely wanted to continue that in college, and Mizzou is definitely a great place for that. What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? Being a music student has given me even more opportunities to be involved here. I am currently in 4 ensembles and I really enjoy each one of them because I of course enjoy playing music, but also just because it’s given me new opportunities to meet so many people. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly, and the whole music community is a great place to be! Why did you decide to study horn as a non-major and how does it benefit you as a student? When I decided to go to Mizzou, I thought there was no way that I was good enough to play in college. I had always been a good player, and participated in honors bands, etc., but I still thought that playing in college was very out of reach for me. I heard that there were scholarships available for qualified horn players. I still very much enjoyed playing horn, so I decided to audition. I’m very glad that I did, because it has given me many opportunities to be involved, and it turns out that I fit in well playing horn here. It is really a great opportunity, and I would for sure recommend trying it out if you’re even remotely interested in wanting to play in college. Anything else you want a prospective student to know about you or the horn studio? Professor Collins is such a wonderful instructor. She has already helped me improve in my confidence as a player, and helped me improve my technique. She works very well with each one of her students, and makes practices fun and interesting. She is for sure one of the best horn players that I have ever worked with, and I’m so glad to have met her this year. I was shocked to know that this was her first year as a horn instructor here at Mizzou because she fits in incredibly well, and has made bonds as though she’s been teaching here for years. Carter Bates
Degree Program: Mechanical Engineering Hometown: Kansas City, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2023 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? There’s a lot to do on campus, as well as off campus. I also really enjoy Mizzou‘s music program, I know and like all of my teachers, and the dorms are pretty nice. What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? Mizzou has scholarship opportunities for music, the ensembles are on task and efficient, and the instructors know what they’re doing and do whatever they can to guide me to become a better player. Why did you decide to study horn as a non-major and how does it benefit you as a student? I decided to study horn because I auditioned for and earned a scholarship to do so- it gives me another way to learn and study music. How does playing in Marching Mizzou effect your student life, academics, horn life, etc.? What are the benefits? Marching Mizzou is a family of people that do all sorts of different things, so finding friends that are fun to be around or helpful when it comes to academics is very easy. The shows we play are also enjoyable and fast paced. Jackson Witt
Degree Program: Music and Anthropology Hometown: Liberty, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2022 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? The campus is great and they had good programs for both of the things I was interested in. What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? The professors are all fantastic and the ensembles are both good and fun. What are the benefits of being a double major? I couldn't imagine not doing music and a double major in music is heavier on the first two years after which my other major picks up more. I take a lot of classes, but I have yet to take a class I didn't enjoy. Liz Ivey
Degree Program: Pre-Health Hometown: Columbia, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2022 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? I decided to go to Mizzou because it was the closest college to me that had a band program. Even though I came to college knowing I wasn’t going to major in music, it was still very important to me that I was able to play music in college in a marching band setting, and concert band setting! I was also coming to college undeclared, so I wanted a college that had many major options. What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? I enjoy being a music student at Mizzou because of all the ensembles I have the option of joining. Mizzou has a marching band, wind ensemble, symphonic band, concert band, orchestra, and horn choir. I also think that Professor Collins is an amazing horn mentor who will make me into a much better horn player. I am conTdent that after college I will be prepared to do anything I want to do with horn thanks to Professor Collins and my experiences in the ensembles at Mizzou! Why did you decide to study horn as a non-major and how does it benefit you as a student? I decided to keep music in my life even as a non-major because without horn I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Music classes give me a chance to be away from the big lecture halls where I can meet other music students, and enjoy doing what I love. I like having the stability of knowing that every semester I will always have lessons, horn choir, an ensemble, and marching mizzou. College can feel hectic but I am happy to know that I will always have this stability in music. How does playing in Marching Mizzou effect your student life, academics, horn life, etc.? What are the benefits? Marching Mizzou has given me so many memories and friendships. The people are amazing and I will never forget my Trst home game. Join the best band in the land! Anything else you want a prospective student to know about you or the horn studio? The college music experience is so much different from my high school experience. The music will be tough, but Professor Collins has done an amazing job at preparing all of us. Join the Mizzou Horn Crew and make lasting friendships while perusing what you love to do! Nathaniel Grindstaff
Degree Program: Engineering Hometown: Springfield, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2022 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? I really enjoyed the community and variety here at Mizzou. I have a music background, but wanted to pursue engineering. Here I could do both, and particulate in each community with the only catch being I had to manage my time. What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? I enjoy being in horn-choir and orchestra as they both offer very unique environments to play, and horn choir is unlike any ensemble I've played in before. Lessons are also offered where you can work with the wonderful staff and faculty at Mizzou to further develop your skills. Why did you decide to study horn as a non-major and how does it benefit you as a student? I've always enjoyed playing music, from choirs to instrumental ensembles, I've enjoyed them all. So when I found out that I could get a music scholarship while also pursuing my engineering studies it was a no-brainer. Anything else you want a prospective student to know about you or the studio? The horn studio is a wonderful way to meet new people and increase your skills as a horn player. There's not many other places were you'll Tnd 8 plus horns all playing at once, it's deTantly one of my favorite parts about attending here. Geoffrey Tibbles
Degree Program: Music Education Hometown: St. Charles, MO Projected Year of Graduation: 2020 What do you like about being a student at Mizzou? Living on your own is cool! There are a wide variety of dining halls around campus! Walking past the columns every day is neat! Our campus is technically a botanical garden! What's not to like?? What do you like about being a Music Student at Mizzou? I love being in large ensembles with Dr. Silvey, Dr. Knopps, and Dr. Ford. All ensembles (wind ensemble, symphonic band, orchestra) have incredible directors. The rep is always challenging and fun to play. Lessons with our applied professors are outstanding and rewarding. Dr. Minturn makes Music Theory fun! How does playing in Marching Mizzou effect your student life, academics, horn life, etc.? What are the benefits? Marching Mizzou is a time commitment from 4:15-6:00 Tuesday through Friday and all day on game day Saturdays, but it is deTnitely worth it. I wouldn't rather spend that time any other way. My mellophones are some of my closest friends. I would push everyone to do Marching Mizzou! Anything else you want a prospective student to know about you or the horn studio? Professor Collins is incredible teacher and horn player. She has helped me grow a lot in her first couple of weeks here, and will continue to be an incredible professor at the University of Missouri for many years to come.
